The 21 Series: Is Your State on the List to Lose Money for Trump’s Wall?
(2/17/2019 emailed 21 Republican Senators up for re-election in 2020)
Nancy Pelosi is distributing a spreadsheet to members of Congress logging a host of wide-ranging local projects potentially threatened by Trump’s effort to shift funds from military construction budgets to the border wall.
The list — nearly 400 projects long — features a number of ventures in GOP districts. It includes maintenance facilities for F-35 stealth fighters at Eielson Air Force Base outside Fairbanks, Alaska; the operation of a middle school at Fort Campbell, Ky.; and funds to replace a training maze at Fort Bragg, N.C.
“We have to … make the case that projects in their backyard are in jeopardy and will likely be raided to help pay for Trump’s ineffective and politically motivated wall,” said a senior Democratic aide.
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Friday, “There are a number of very important military projects, Army Corps of Engineer projects that would be robbed of money to continue to move forward with these projects that would impact California. It looks like he’s going to take money away from drug interdiction which would harm California… He probably will undermine our men and women in uniform … if they can’t have the types of resources at the military installations where they’re located. I could go on and on.”
How do you think your constituents will feel when they recognize local jobs and projects in their home town are being scrapped to pay for a medieval wall that will do nothing but stand as a symbol of racism? I think you will find out how they feel when they vote in 2020.
