(1/19/2019 emailed 21 Republican Senators up for re-election in 2020)

Republican Will Hurd says Trump’s border crisis is fabricated. Hurd is a former undercover CIA officer and the only Republican lawmaker representing a border district in Texas. Texas CD-23 is one of the largest in the country and includes 820 miles of border between San Antonio and El Paso so I think Hurd knows of what he speaks.

Representative Hurd told Rolling Stone magazine that the border crisis Trump expounds upon is a “myth,” and that his wall is the “most expensive and least effective way to do border security.” He said using eminent domain to take land for the border wall would impact 1,000 Texas property owners and that building a wall is “third-century solution to a 21st-century problem.”

“What I always say is building a wall from sea to shining sea is the most expensive and least effective way to do border security,” Hurd said. Instead Hurd is recommending a fiber-optic cable running under the entire 2,000-mile stretch between the United States and Mexico. Hurd argues such a cable would provide new sensory tools to help Border Patrol monitor the border while also providing high-speed internet access to rural communities. Brilliant!

Will Hurd is a principled Republican. He has voted alongside Democrats eight times in January to reopen the government without granting Trump the $5.7 billion in border-wall funding he has demanded. Will wants a high tech solution to border security that will also meet the needs of poor people currently without access to high-speed internet. Do you not see the win/win/win in his approach?

Listen to one of your own — Representative Will Hurd (R-Texas). There is no doubt in my mind he will be re-elected in 2020. I wonder what your chances would look like if you had the integrity, courage and vision of Will Hurd.
